3D Printing -- Abbie Lucas

Well it's finally happened, we now have the technology to make a 3D print of anything we want!  Thanks to Chuck Hull and his decades of research and testing, the world of technology is changing.
3D printers can be small, but some can be extremely large. No matter the size of the machine it can take on big projects. No more wasteful products, expensive spare parts, slow prototypes, and expensive prosthetics. This is where we can all thank Chuck Hull for the invention of the 3D printer. Mechanics can now have spare parts in no time. 3D printing is a method that produces the least amount of waste. Prototypes can now be mass produced in fast time. Financial issues when in need of a prosthetic? Don't worry about it! 3D printers are able to create safe and trusted prosthetic.
Metal 3D printing is one of the newest innovations in the industry. It is important to society because this allows for the spare parts and even some prosthetic to be made. High impact 3D printed metals can potentially be used for robot parts, car parts and repairs. ̈ MX3D is specialized in robotic 3D printing, its mission being to introduce the advantages of metal 3D printing to high-impact industries. More precisely, the company creates robust and easy to use robotic additive manufacturing technology (Dagg).¨ Jason Dagg talks about his plans to mainly use this innovation to create robot parts and structures.
Can you imagine that in my lifetime that I may know people who can have a 3D printed prosthetic limb or a 3D generated lifesaving artery or medical implant? I could also end up living in a 3D printed home. What would I print first? The possibilities are endless. Crazy to think about...

  1. Overall this is a very interesting blog and it taught me lots of new things about 3D printing! In your blog you say,"3D printing is a method that produces the least amount of waste," I would like to learn more about this, by reading about an example.

    1. That's a great question Ana. Because 3D printing only uses one material (plastic) there is very little waste left over. Plus, when there is plastic fragments leftover from one printing, it can just be used in the printing of another object. When a product is made out of multiple materials like metal, wire, rubber or wood, there is more opportunity for leftover materials and waste.

  2. I love your blog, and the different examples of things we don't need anymore because of 3D printing! I would like to know more about what motivated and inspired Chuck Hull to invent this, and how he came to this idea.

    2. Thank you Amelia for the feedback, there isn't much out there about what drove him but, Chuck Hull realized that his concept was not limited to liquids and therefore gave him the generic name steroelithography. He filed broad patent claims covering that his new product ¨material capable of solidification¨ or ¨material capable of altering its natural state¨. However, Chuck Hull is an engineer who was given "a little lab to play around in" and that's exactly what he did. His curiosity led to the discovery and invention of 3D printing.

  3. I found your blog very interesting and informative. The pictures that you used helped me understand the content of the blog much better. In the blog you wrote, "Financial issues when in need of a prosthetic?" I would like to see a quote saying how much less expensive use of a 3D printer is when printing a precise item, rather than buying it. Other than that, I really enjoyed the blog, and thought that you did a great job.

    1. Great question James, depending how customized the prosthetic needs to be, a 3D printed prosthetic can range anywhere from 5,000 dollars to 30,000 dollars. Non 3D printed prosthetic range from 5,000 dollars to 50,000 dollars. Different aspects of prosthetic can be cheaper but there still are some that are approximately the same price depending on customization.
